Why I Always Start With the Moon

We all know our Sun sign (raise your hand if you always read your Cosmo magazine horoscopes). The Sun changes signs once a month, which makes it easy to track and, well, marketable. But here’s the secret most people don’t realize: the Moon changes signs every 2.5 days. That means your Moon sign is one of the most personal, specific, and revealing parts of your chart.

And yet… modern astrology tends to put the spotlight on the Sun. Society has conditioned us to over-identify with it because it’s neat, predictable, and fits nicely into a monthly calendar. But when I sit with a client, I always start with the Moon. Why? Because your Moon sign tells me about your inner world. It’s your soul’s first home.

What the Moon Really Represents

Most astrology books will tell you the Moon represents your emotions, your instinctual self, or your mother. And sure, that’s not wrong. But in Shamanic Astrology, the Moon has an even deeper story.

Your Moon sign is the story of your past lives. It’s the archetype and mystery school you already mastered. It’s the wisdom you bring into this life, the place where you feel most competent, familiar, and at ease.

So, when you’re in right relationship with your Moon, it becomes a gift you can share with the world.

Childhood & the Moon

Here’s where things get interesting: as kids, we often over-identify with our Moon sign.

So if a family doesn’t understand or celebrate that archetype’s energy, the child’s natural essence gets shut down, shamed, or ignored

Other times, the opposite happens. A child’s Moon traits are encouraged and praised so much that they become the only acceptable version of that child. The result? The child clings to their Moon for safety, gets stuck there, and the shadow side creeps in. For example:

  • An addicted Libra Moon might grow up into co-dependence.
  • An addicted Virgo Moon might become overly critical or rigid.

Reclaiming Your Moon

This is where the work of what I call “reclaiming your Moon” comes in.

Together we ask:

  • Was your Moon repressed (shut down or shamed)?
  • Or was it addictive (praised so much it took over)?

Once we uncover the story, we bring healing. Sometimes this looks like somatic work, feeling into the emotions of your Moon Goddess. Sometimes it’s nurturing your inner child with an astrological twist. It’s always about honoring and making peace with that archetype without letting it run the whole show.

In Shamanic Astrology, the sweet spot is spending about one-third of your time in your Moon sign. Just enough to feel at home, but not so much that you never leave the house.

Why It Matters

When you’re in right relationship with your Moon, the rest of your chart opens up beautifully:

  • Venus: your new feminine expression, the goddess you’re here to grow into.
  • Ascendant: the mystery school of this lifetime.
  • Jupiter: your dharmic path of expansion.

Without grounding in your Moon, those pieces can feel untethered. With the Moon reclaimed, they become exciting invitations for growth.

Coming Home 🌙

The Moon is your soul’s first home in this life. By reclaiming it, you create the foundation for your soul’s next great adventure.

So here’s your invitation: look up your Moon sign. Spend a little time with that archetype. Reflect on your childhood, was this part of you nurtured, shamed, or over-praised? And how do you feel about that energy/archetype now?

And if you’re ready to go deeper, this is the heart of what I do in my readings. It’s not just astrology, it’s integration, healing, and alchemy.

Because before you can step into who you’re becoming… you’ve got to come home to where you began.
